Russian musicians playing Irish music for Russian set-dancers is not something you see every day! We wanted to tell you our story, so the album features a painstakingly-designed 40-page illustrated booklet, revealing how Polca an Rí came to be, where the journey of playing for the sets has brought us, how we got all these wonderful tunes, and what Irish-Russian musical connections we've forged along the way. It comes in hard cover with fantastical art by Sophie Petkevich.

about

Hop Jig, Slip Jig, Slide: CUCANANDY / MY MIND WILL NE’ER BE AISY / PADDY JONES’

Anton Zille – fiddle
Pavel Galushko – bouzouki
Philipp Barsky – harp

Paddy Jones – a fiddle player, a philosopher, and a friend. Paddy was one of the two surviving students of Pádraig O’Keeffe, and the only one in Ireland at the time of his untimely death in May 2020. Tony met Paddy in Miltown after Máire O’Keeffe brought him in to preside in the ‘House of Lords’ – the gathering of the older-generation fiddle players from all over Ireland during the Willie Week. The first thing Paddy shared with Tony upon learning he’s Russian? That his favourite author was Nikolay Gogol and that Dead Souls was a terrific read! Paddy was truly a gentleman of the bygone era and a man for deep, serious talks. He had a unique style of playing, with his polkas and slides being pure Sliabh Luachra, his reels influenced by the likes of Paddy Canny, and his slow airs being something else entirely, often resembling lonesome sean-nós singing and touching you somewhere deep within. This entire set is made up of variations of an old tune that Paddy liked, and which Dolly McMahon recorded as A Dandling Song. Denis Murphy opens up her track by playing what is now a well-known slide, seamlessly transitioning into the tune of the song. The combination resulted in Paddy memorising the tune as a three-part slide. We played this unique version in a fiddle trio with Paddy’s student Dónal Cullinane on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. Paddy was very fond of the harp, so we asked Philipp to join us here in tribute to this very special man and musician.

Traditional, arranged by Anton Zille, Pavel Galushko and Philipp Barsky. The version of the slide, effectively an amalgamation of two Denis Murphy slides, comes from Paddy Jones (1947–2020) of Knightsmountain, Knocknagoshel, Co. Kerry.
