Some tunes are just meant to be enjoyed, be it in a good company or just your own. Such are the compositions of fiddle player Seán Ryan of Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, which have spread to Irish music sessions across the world. The stories go that Seán could abandon his work in the field and run off for the fiddle when a tune would come to him. It’s a good thing he did too, as these tunes are now among Tony’s favourites! Many know and love the first reel, but it is the lesser-known Dash to Portobello that Tony played across several countries when looking for a new fiddle – after this recording was complete. Maybe one day we’ll all come together again to record more tunes – and then some of them will surely be Seán Ryan’s.
