Russian musicians playing Irish music for Russian set-dancers is not something you see every day! We wanted to tell you our story, so the album features a painstakingly-designed 40-page illustrated booklet, revealing how Polca an Rí came to be, where the journey of playing for the sets has brought us, how we got all these wonderful tunes, and what Irish-Russian musical connections we've forged along the way. It comes in hard cover with fantastical art by Sophie Petkevich.

Reels: OLD TORN PETTICOAT / RAKISH PADDY

Pavel Galushko – bouzouki
Anton Zille – fiddle

“The friends we made along the way” is literally how our band grew to have many lineups. It being a fairly small community in a rather large country, with cities separated by hundreds of kilometres, we’ve kept to our fine little tradition of inviting fellow Irish music enthusiasts to join us for a couple of sets on stage, and always tried to gather up a tune whenever we went on tour. Every one of us has a history of playing as guest musicians in our friends’ projects. On one such occasion, in Russia’s northern gem of Vologda, Tony joined the visiting trio of Phil, Pavel and Sophie for a couple of tunes – and ended up playing many more off-stage. The idea to record some laid-back sets with Pavel on the bouzouki was born there and then, and these were some of the reels we played that day. Rakish Paddy in particular is one of our mutual all-time favourites. Here’s to the return of tunes everywhere so we can blasht it out outside our kitchens!
